I had a rather slow spring break, but mid-week my dad took the day off and we traveled to Suphur to try the "famous" McDonald's Shamrock shake and take pictures at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Famous is in quotations because my dad had never heard of it, and it wasn't even advertised at the McDonald's we tried it.
Verdict: The flavoring was so thick that it tasted a little alcoholic. Flavor was a little on the spearmint gum side. Fun to try, but it wasn't the awesomeness I was expecting thanks to some praise I read on the internet. Stupid internet.
More interestingly, Sulphur had a forest fire! Dad and I hadn't heard about it.
A few lame searches later yielded a blog that said they were planned fires. So that makes it less exciting, but in general better for the park, I suppose.
Some of it was looking like it was some dead wood that could use clearing out, so we thought it might be a controlled fire.
Other parts looked a bit more devastated, which was mainly why we thought it was a forest fire.
We saw some of these and thought they were maybe they were clearing stuff out and accidentally started a fire. Dad and I were playing detectives, pulling clues out of even more mundane things (Ahah! They left an earplug! Clearly they were the irresponsible type of people who would set a forest on fire they were clearing out.)
The little bits of green poking out were quite pretty though. 'You'll never take me alive, fire.'
The plants were a very cool yellow. Sadly it kind of means they are deadish, but they look snazzy on the way out.
The spiders have already moved back in. I had never seen one of these little funnel type webs before. I bent down and had a chat with the little guy. He didn't seem to appreciate the company much.
Also, I saw my favorite order of insect. Go true bugs!
Oh yeah, and ...
DAD STEPPED OFF THE TRAIL! HE STEPPED OFF THE TRAIL! I tried not to freak out. He did find this neat rock:
He thinks it may have 'sploded from the heat.
Hurrah for dad and me adventures~
